Short Term Fellowships

Award Submission Deadline: The deadline for 2013 Short Term Fellowship applications will be June 1, 2013.
Award Notifications: For June 1 applicants, notifications are expected by September 2013. The start date will depend on Education/Research Visa Approvals by the appropriate ministries, and the Government of Pakistan.

Applications are invited for short-term lecture and research fellowships for senior scholars at the post-doctoral level and for advanced graduate students at the pre-doctoral level. Duration of fellowships will be from one to five months. Fellows will be required to present a minimum of two lectures per month at approved host institutions (see Fellowship FAQ's) or the AIPS centers in Islamabad or Lahore. Each participant will be required to sign a release that stipulates the relevant security issues that need to be adopted.

Awards will include international travel expenses and stipends (subject to availability of funds). The amount of the stipends will be comparable to Fulbright Awards and will be determined by the Fellowships Committee based on availability of funds and current rates as defined by the U S State Department. (Total fellowship support can range from $3,000 to $25,000). Funds may be used for research on materials relating to the history and culture of Pakistan. Research in Pakistan is restricted to Lahore and Islamabad and AIPS requires that the Fellow stay in AIPS designated or approved accommodations (see Fellowship FAQ's).

Each participant will be required to sign a release that stipulates the relevant security issues that need to be adopted (if applicable) and the fellowship terms and conditions.

Eligibility

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled/employed full-time in an institution of higher education in the USA.

Short-term fellowships to Pakistan have been funded by the Public Affairs Section, American Embassy, Islamabad, Pakistan. All fellowship recipients should enroll as AIPS individual members prior to commencing the fellowship.

Note: All fellows must be unaccompanied during their AIPS tenure in Pakistan; family members, spouses, and partners may not accompany them during the fellowship. Only if a spouse or partner also receives a fellowship would he or she be able to travel to Pakistan.

Fees

A non-refundable processing fee of $30 must be included with the completed application form. Any forms that are incomplete will be returned without refund of the application fee.

Post-doctoral awardees who are not affiliated with an AIPS member institution must pay an administrative fee of $250 before beginning the Fellowship. Pre-doctoral applicants do not need to pay the administrative fee, but should enroll as AIPS individual members prior to commencing the fellowship.

Application Procedure

The application is an online package. Candidates must use this online application package. Paper or email applications will no longer be accepted.

Pre-doctoral applicants should have completed all requirements for the PhD except for dissertation. Pre-doctoral applications should also include a transcript and a letter from the dissertation advisor (This letter can be one of the three letters of reference).

Review Process

Once completed applications are received and the deadline for applications has passed, fellowships applications are sent out to an external review committee, made up of Pakistan Studies scholars. All members of the Executive Committee vote on the review committee members. This committee makes recommendations to the AIPS Executive Committee. The Executive Committee makes final award decisions.
