The History Department and the interdisciplinary doctoral program ASPECT (Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought) at Virginia Tech seek an innovative, theoretically engaged cultural or intellectual historian with research and teaching interests that focus on pre-twentieth-century Continental Europe or Asia and emphasize issues of race, gender, or ethnicity. Applicants whose research engages global/transnational perspectives, who are committed to using new media and emerging technologies in teaching and research, and who will contribute to one of the department's emerging areas of inquiry (Identity, Politics, and Power; Science, Technology, and the Environment; Knowledge Production and Transmission) are especially encouraged to apply. This position is part of a cluster hire in ASPECT, although the tenure home will be in the History Department.
The successful candidate for this tenure-track appointment will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate educational missions of the department by teaching a variety of introductory survey courses, upper division courses, and graduate courses, including ASPECT courses. The ability to successfully mentor doctoral students in this program and a commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research are a must. The potential for excellence in teaching and research is also required, as is the commitment to work effectively with a diverse campus population in support of Virginia Tech's "Principles of Community."

The University of Wisconsin - Madison invites applications for the position of lecturer in the Urdu language, to begin fall 2011. Teach three courses per semester to graduate and undergraduate students at the 75% level. The position requires responsibility for teaching preparation, preparation of syllabi, adapting teaching material, holding office hours, student performance evaluation, full and regular participation in department pedagogical activities, regular meeting and collaboration with department pedagogy specialist. Instructors are expected to stay abreast of current foreign language teaching and testing theories and methods.

The School wishes to appoint a scholar with an outstanding publication record and with active research plans, who will contribute to the Department's ability to retain top research recognition in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) in the UK. You will have expertise in literature, cultural studies, popular culture or media, and teaching and/or research expertise in Pakistan will be especially welcome. You will ideally hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (literature, media, popular culture), will be fluent in at least one of the languages of Pakistan and will be able to teach and supervise research using materials in that language.

Ideal candidates will have a minimum of 3 years of experience teaching
Urdu to adults (1 year of teaching a related subject may be substituted); a
B.A. in Urdu, linguistics or second language study, or in the history, culture
or literature of the area in which Urdu is spoken; familiarity with educational
technology; and U.S. citizenship.
Advanced degrees and publications are a plus. An active security clearance
or ability to get a security clearance is also a big plus.

The Department of Government invites applications from distinguished senior scholars for appointment to the Charles N. Wilson Chair in Pakistani Studies. This is the first privately endowed chair of its kind at a US public university and honors the late Congressman from Texas. The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Urdu and Hindi beginning September 1, 2007. The position is a renewable one-year appointment, and is subject to final budgetary approval.
