Call for Submission - S.S. Pirzada Dissertation Prize on Pakistan!!

AIPS parterner institution, the Institute for South Asia Studies, and the Berkeley Pakistan Initiative are delighted to announce the inaugural S. S. Pirzada Dissertation Prize for 2016-17. They invite submission of the best Ph.D. dissertation on Pakistan (or the region that is now Pakistan) in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Visual & Fine Arts, Law, and Public Health. Comparative Ph.D. dissertations will be accepted as long as Pakistan forms at least 50% of the content and the dissertee can make a specific case for the research on Pakistan. 

Only Ph.D. dissertations submitted at an accredited North American or European Union-based University will be accepted. The prize comes with a $2,500 book subvention. For information about the previous prizewinner click here

Ph.D. dissertations submitted for consideration must have been filed between September 2, 2015, and September 1, 2016.

The submission package must include the following:

1  A pdf abstract (500-1000 words),

2  A pdf curriculum vitae (please include a contact number)

3  A pdf copy of the dissertation,

4  A confidential letter from a member of the dissertation committee that speaks to the merits of the dissertation with respect to the current state of the field and the innovation that the work entails.

Number 4 should be submitted in hard copy to:

All submission materials must be received no later than December 1, 2016. Late submissions will not be accepted.

A Prize Committee will determine the winner. In 2016-17 the Prize Committee will comprise Prof. Manan Ahmed (Columbia University), Prof. Munis Faruqui (UC Berkeley), Prof. David Gilmartin (North Carolina State University), Prof. Farooq Hamid (UC Riverside), and Prof. Saba Mahmood (UC Berkeley). 

Results will be announced by 5 pm on February 10, 2017 (Pacific Standard Time). The winner will be expected to attend an all expense paid award conferral ceremony at UC Berkeley in Spring 2017.
