Fellowship Competition 2008
The 2008 AIIS fellowship competition applications are now on the AIIS web site at www.indiastudies.org. We decided that we will no longer automatically send each trustee an application. However, if you would like an application for yourself, a colleague, or a student, please let me know and I can mail you one. Otherwise the application materials can be easily downloaded. The web site now has model successful proposals from three former AIIS fellows--one junior, one senior, and one performing arts--to provide some guidance to applicants. I obtained permission from the three former fellows and their proposals are being posted anonymously. The application postmark deadline is July 1, 2008. Please distribute the information about the fellowship competition to colleagues and students at your institutions. If you have not done so recently, please also provide me with the name and email address of the coordinators at your institutions that deal with outside grants for faculty and graduate students so that I can contact them directly with information about the fellowship program. For your convenience, here is a short blurb about the competition:

Type: Musical Concert
Time: 8:00PM
Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2008
The students of classical vocals class (Dhurpad) & Flute class will perform led by Ustad Hafeez khan Talwandi. The concert will commence with Flute recitation by Razi followed by Ayesha Ali, Zehra Saeed, Navtej & Asad Malik presenting classical compositions rendered in Allap-Dhurpad style. The evening will conclude with Dhurpad recitation by Ustad Hafeez Khan Talwandi who presents a distinctive ideology of Dhurpad, in which Islam entirely replaces the Hindu frame of reference adopted by most Dhu rpad musicians (both Hindus and Muslims) in India. The distinguishing characteristic of Allap and Dhurpad is their spirituality (ruhaniyat), and the objective in singing them is zikr-e-ilahi, "Praising the name of God".
