Pakistan's Hazara University-Team
Discovers Remains of the Kushan City
Kushan City Discovered
in Mansehra NWFP
A team of archaeologists of Hazara University discovered
the remains of one of the largest Kushan City site in Chittar
Kot, Mansehra, NWFP. The Hazara University team was lead
by Prof. Dr. Ihsan Ali Vice Chancellor & Professor of Archaeology,
which includes experts of Archaeology of the Department.
The site Chittar Kot, is located on a high spur overlooking
the Siran River, offering one of the most spectacular view
of the river and the surrounding area. The site is located
at 34? 22.356' N and 73? 08.214' E at an elevation of 945
meters from mean sea level in a pine forests in the Hamsherian
Union Council of District Mansehra. The site was earlier
spotted by Mr. Abdul Hameed and Mr. Muhammad Ashfaq of the
Hazara Cultural Museum during a survey of archaeological
sites in Mansehra. The site of Chittar Kot may have been
derived from the word Chittra meaning an umbrella or an elevated
place represents a large Kushan settlement site, protected
by a similar defensive structure on the west and the exposed
structures are spread over a mile area on the steep hill.
The strategic location of the site warranted an effective
control of the surrounding area on all four directions, and
thus could have been of multi-faceted defensive and settlement
purpose of far reaching consequences for the establishment
of the cultural profile of Mansehra district. It gives an
unhindered view of the present settlements of Nawa-Shehr,
Kherian and Bhir Khund. As the site represented a settlement
site, it had escaped the attention of robbers/illegal diggers
who are after the valuable art pieces of Buddhist Art of
Gandhara in the area and who have destroyed most of the archaeological
sites in Mansehra and in the surrounding areas. However,
the local population had sporadically found many coins of
the Kushan period, including those of the great Kushan ruler
King Kanishka of the first century AD from the site. The
Department of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Management, Hazara
University Mansehra is in active dialogue to get permission
from the locals and owners of the site in order to excavate
and conduct a multi-disciplinary research at the site to
establish the cultural profile of the area, know the living
patterns of its inhabitants and establish the contribution
of the population of the area in the spread of Buddhism though
Silk Route to China, Korea and Japan. This excavation will
also provide extensive material to the newly established
Hazara Cultural Museum at Hazara University and will shed
new light on the people of the area two thousands years ago.
Furthermore, Hazara University will ensure the preservation
of the exposed structures at the site and will provide security,
thus this site will be established as a major tourist attraction
in the area and will bring prosperity and will open new job
prospects for the local population. It is needless to mention
that during the past year, Hazara University discovered more
than 250 archaeologically sites in Mansehra District, 304
in Abbottabad District and 100 in Haripur District, dating
from 2nd millennium BC to the Sikh - British Period, and
is actively pursuing the preservation and documentation of
the endangered cultural assets of the area. Hazara University
is on the verge of starting major archaeologically excavation
in Mansehra, Abbottabad and Haripur districts.
